Riders quarterback battle continues

The head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders remains unsettled as to who he thinks can lead his team.

Last week against the Calgary Stampeders, Tino Sunseri appeared to have finally gained the upper hand for good after nearly pulling off at the 24-point comeback in the second half. However, that performance may not have sealed the deal.

“For me, it’s a position that’s unsettled,” said head coach Corey Chamblin. “How those guys practice and how they move forward will be the guy that leads us into game-day.”

So, it appears there’s still a chance that Seth Doege could be the man in Montreal on Monday. However, the head coach may be just trying to keep everything close to the vest at this point in the week.

Based on practice on Wednesday, it appears that Sunseri will likely be the man under centre on Monday; it was an extra practice for the team where they didn’t do too much work on offence or defence.

Regardless, Sunseri is open to the competition.

“It’s awesome. I think whenever you have competition it brings out the best in you. It brings out the best in the team,” he said. “It makes sure our team is doing the work during the week.”

That competition is about to get hotter as well with the pending arrival of 41-year-old Kerry Joseph. It would have to be considered a long shot for Joseph to start this week. However, it could be considered down the road.

Either way, expect Joseph to be welcomed with open arms.

“It’s a blessing. whenever they bring in a guy that’s obviously had success, won a Grey Cup and (has) been in the league and seen all the defences and has all those experiences, it adds to our quarterback room,” said Sunseri. “Pick his brain and just try to see what he’s thinking on certain things to help us as individuals.”

Friday’s game was one to forget for Doege after throwing three interceptions in less than one half of football. Needless today he’s pretty happy to have some degree of confidence from the coaching staff.

Doege knows he can be better too.

“I’m not going to let circumstances define who I am as a player,” he said. “I continue to work and develop. I have the skill-set to be a quarterback in this league, but as a pro, you can’t go out and miss those throws.”

It’s that time of year again; teams across the CFL are adding players to their practice roster as the number of spots on it expands.

On Wednesday the Riders added linebacker Diamond Ferri, offensive lineman Pierce Burton, defensive lineman Justin Cole, quarterback Denarius McGhee, kicker Quinn Sharp and receiver Chris Summer. Kicker Justin Palardy was also released. Chamblin did suggest Ferri could play this week in Montreal.

Some members of the Riders walking wounded list appear poised to return with offensive lineman Chris Best, full back Neal Hughes and punter Josh Bartel all practicing. Levy Adcock was still in for Xavier Fulton at left tackle.
