Women of Wonder break out with donation event

The Women of Wonder in Prince Albert have lived up to their name.

On Monday the local group held an event to raise money for the Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women.

Carol Soles, executive director of the shelter said that while funding is provided for day-to-day operations of the shelter, it doesn’t cover some of the smaller things that can really help the women who are in need of the facility be comfortable.

“We don’t get funding for the extras like pajamas and personal care items,” said Soles. “Most of the time when the women come to our door with their children they have nothing, and what’s nicer than having a nice bath and cozying up in pajamas?”

Soles said she is very grateful for what the Women of Wonder have done.

“It’s so exciting Women of Wonder, that’s just incredible, and all we can do is say WOW,” said Soles.

One of the group members of Women of Wonder, Lorna Boryski, said she and a few friends came together to create the Women of Wonder after seeing a need for donations with the women’s shelter.

“We just decided that we wanted to do something a little bit bigger,” said Boryski. “We put it out on Facebook, said who wants to help and got a bunch of women together.”

Speaking about the group she said the focus is really on all women.

“Women of Wonder are everybody,” said Boryski. “All women are amazing and wonderful and that’s kind of how we coined the phrase.”

Boryski said being able to help give back has been amazing for her and the group.

“It feels really, really good, and they’re so appreciative,” said Boryski.

The group’s kickoff gala featured food, drinks and entertainment including door prizes and auctions.

If you weren’t able to make it to the event you can still make a donation to the shelter, Soles said they’ll take various types of donations.

“Gently-used clothing and furniture, food items, people bring us cases of food, and just about anything that you could use in your home,” said Soles. “If someone is moving and they had some furniture they’d like to donate we’d be happy to take it.”
