Poppy sales soaring this year

Nov 8, 2014 | 7:27 AM

Over 19 million poppies have been sold across Canada so far this year.

That’s already one million more than the total sold at this time last year.

In Prince and area, support has also been very great for the veterans, and members of the armed forces.

“We are getting calls for more poppies to go out, and we’ve been putting out an average of 400 poppies per tree, and an average of 600 poppies per day in the stores,” said Carole Eyberson with the Prince Albert branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

In addition to high poppy sales, Eyberson said they’ve also been selling more wreaths this year, which will be brought to the Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday at the Prince Albert Armoury.

“Some people you know don’t want another wreath because they have one at home but they’ll send a donation, and our donations are pretty high this year,” she said.

The recent deaths of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent are believed to be contributing factors to the spurred demand this year. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War, better known as the Great War.

“We don’t have any World One Vets left but there will still be a wreath laid in their honour,” said Eyberson.

The ceremony in Prince Albert will start just before 11 a.m. People are encouraged to arrive early in order to get a good seat.

The past two years, there has been standing room only by 10:30 a.m.
