Kelly Parent, 37, finished 3rd this month at the world jiu-jitsu championship in Long Beach, California.

Parent had competed at the Las Vegas International back in May, but had a disappointing finish. He knew he had to make some changes ahead of this competition.

“I nailed my diet perfectly and I really started focusing on my technique,” said Parent. “At the end of the day I believe that hard work will beat out talent.”

Parent has been training jiu-jitsu for nearly seven years, and has worked his way up blue belt.

Training for this last competition, required a lot of sacrifice.

“It completely engulfed my life for the last eight weeks before the competition. There were some days if I was not at the gym doing weights, I was doing cardio or rolling at the club. There were some days where I was at the gym four times a day,” he said.

Parent is already busy planning for next year. He wants to go back to Long Beach, and bring back a world championship to Prince Albert.
