Bye, bye Boston; Raiders part ways with mascot

Nov 21, 2014 | 7:42 PM

After just one home game as the Raiders mascot, Boston Raider’s days could already be over.

The Raiders announced in a statement before Friday’s game that “there will not be a team mascot at their Western Hockey League home games until further notice.”

The announcement comes just one game into Boston’s career with the Raiders, as he debuted on Nov. 14, the Raiders’ last home game.

The mascot sparked controversy and attracted national attention this week, accusing that Boston was ethnically stereotypical towards Middle Eastern people.

The Raiders defended that the mascot was meant to show their history, as it was modelled after the logo they used when they won the Memorial Cup in 1985. They explained their position and apologized for the mascot on their official team website.

“The mascot unveiled November 14, 2014 was a derivation of the team’s original logo with the goal of enriching the game night experience for our loyal fans and was not intended to be offensive in nature,” the Raiders posted in a release on their website. “The organization apologizes if anyone was offended by the character. There will be no further comment from the organization in this matter.”
