Marc Mueller enjoying life on other side of football

Nov 29, 2014 | 7:32 AM

Life as a coach has led to a whole new game for Marc Mueller. The former University of Regina Rams starting quarterback joined the Calgary Stampeders this season but not in a role he or anyone else might have expected.

Mueller is actually a defensive assistant with the Stamps.

“It’s been great. Ever since I started here in Calgary, it’s been nothing but fun,” said Mueller.

“The year has gone by really fast. Great guys to work with on this staff.”

Mueller admits that he never thought his coaching career would lead him to the other side of the ball. Mueller was one of the better Rams quarterbacks in school history. So, the natural move would have been for Mueller to work on a staff as an offensive assistant coach.

Instead, Mueller is doing what he can to help the Stampeders defence.

“Most of my work is with the linebackers. A lot of the scouting reports and the game breakdowns, I do a lot of that,” said Mueller.

“It’s been great. It’s allowed me to see other defences in the league, other offences in the league and our own.”

Mueller’s past life as a quarterback would have helped him understand defences but this new life as a defensive coach has opened Mueller up to a whole new level of understanding the game.

Mueller admits that when he was younger he thought that you could basically out throw teams every week to win. Now, he’s grown to appreciate just what a great running game and defence can do as well.

That doesn’t mean that Mueller has completely forgotten his roots as he does still keep an eye on what offensive coordinator Dave Dickenson is doing with the offence.

“I always pay attention. Some of the stuff we do is very unique and it’s very good,” he said.

The guy running the offence has taken notice of Mueller as well. Dickenson thinks that Mueller is doing a great job.

“I know he wants to coach. He’s doing a great job. Love the guy,” said Dickenson. “Really though he’s done a good job this year.”

Dickenson jokes that he probably wouldn’t consider making a move like Mueller did to the defensive side of the ball. But, like Mueller he’s learning what he can too as Dickenson has been meeting with defensive coordinator Rich Stubler throughout the year to get a better understanding of the Stampeders defence.

Not only has coaching defence been a new experience, but so has living away from Regina. This is the first time Mueller has lived somewhere other than the city and province he calls home.

What’s even stranger about this set-up? Mueller has converted his family to wearing red instead of green.

“My mom is wearing red today. She wears the Stamps gear with pride as is my dad and my girlfriend. I try to get her family to do it as much as possible too,” said Mueller.

If Mueller has his way, this experience will allow him to follow in his grandfather Ron Lancaster’s footsteps and become a head coach.
