Warriors steal Game 3 from the Raiders, take 2-1 series lead

The Prince Albert Raiders looked to have taken a 2-1 WHL playoff series lead over the Moose Jaw Warriors when Justin Nachbaur scored to give the Raiders and their 2,840 fans a 4-2 goal to cheer about, with just 2:40 remaining in the game Tuesday at the Art Hauser Centre.

But the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy winning Warriors had other ideas. They were able score twice with their goaltender pulled to tie up the game and force overtime, with Brayden Burke scoring the winner just 19 seconds into the extra frame to win Game 3, 5-4.

The Warriors got back into the game with an end-to-end rush from Josh Brook, who beat Raiders goaltender Ian Scott through the five-hole.

“I guess you could say that [was the turning point], but we try to not let that kind of stuff bother us,” Raiders captain Curtis Miske said. “We were still winning the game at that point, we just got to find a way to close it out.”

“It’s disappointing,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “On the third goal, their defenceman made a good play but Scottie probably wants that back. On the tier, we had a chance to get it out and we’re not sure if it was offside or not. Then on the scramble in front, they scored. They obviously had the momentum heading into overtime and finished it early.”

Before the series started, Habscheid said a lot people outside of the Raiders’ dressing room was assuming the Warriors would come in and sweep the series. But the Raiders won Game 1 5-3, then lost back-to-back overtime games, including a 3-2 defeat in Game 2.

“It doesn’t matter, it’s all about wins in the playoffs,” Habscheid said. “Right now, we could be up 3-0 as easy as down 2-1. We have to look at it that way. This is a tough loss, no doubt. There’s not much that you can tell the guys right now, just keep your heads ups. Tomorrow’s a new day and we’ll got at’er again tomorrow.”

Rest of the series

If Tuesday’s contest is any indication, Wednesday’s Game 4 at the Art Hauser Centre will be an intense and well attended affair. The Raiders announced an attendance of 2,840 for Game 3.

Both teams will head down to Moose Jaw for Game 5 on Saturday at 7 p.m. If necessary, there’ll be a Game 6 on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre, with a possible Game 7 is slated on April 3 in Moose Jaw.
