2 missing as house burns on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation

Dec 29, 2014 | 11:57 AM

The search continues for two people that could be inside an Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation house that was engulfed in flames on Monday.

According to RCMP spokesperson Mandy Maier, Shellbrook RCMP was called out to the home after initial reports said four people were possibly trapped inside.

“At this point investigators have confirmed that two individuals have made it out of the home.  At this point they’re still working to determine the location of two other individuals,” she said around 12:30 p.m.

The two missing people, a 61-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, both from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, have not been located at this time. RCMP said it is believed they were in the home at the time of the fire.

By 3 p.m. the house was still burning and too hot to approach.

The family has asked for privacy at this time, so their names and photos are not being released.

Currently the cause of the blaze is unknown.

This isn’t the first fire to hit the community.  Back in November 2011, a house fire took the lives of two men and severely injured a young girl.

Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation is approximately 72 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
