Trucks unload round-the-clock at Regina snow dump
A never ending stream of trucks were unloading piles of snow next to the Regina landfill on Saturday. Crews had a lot of snow to dump as they cleaned up nine centimeters of snow.
Dan Frohlick drives a loader forwards and backwards, smoothing the large snow hill that he helped create. The pile is getting larger as 30 city and privately owned trucks arrived every half hour.
“There’s probably been at least 200 loads today and we usually have about 15 to 18 semis going every night. They’ll do, depending where they are, ten trips each. That’s a lot of loads,” said Frohlick.
With all the traffic coming and going at the snow storage facility, he said loaders have crashed into trucks.
Frohlick has been making snow piles for the last five years. He said this year’s hill is not the biggest one he’s ever seen.
“Two years ago this whole 40 or 50 acres was full. This is a drop in the bucket so far.”
Trucks are not just bringing in snow. City worker Emmanuel Sindani says debris is also picked up from streets and parking lots.
“Bikes, t-shirts and beer bottles. Those cars that kids would drive when they’re younger, toy cars, I’ve seen one of those in the snow before. I don’t know how it got in there, it was mangled. “
Seeing that much snow at work takes a toll on Sindani.
“Seeing the pile every single day, it becomes more frustrating… I would love to go somewhere hot right now, somewhere really, really hot.”
