Iconic Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard dies

An internationally-renowned artist from Saskatchewan has died.

According to a media release from the family, Joe Fafard passed away on Saturday at his home in Lumsden.

“Joe died the way he lived, simply, unpretentiously, in complete serenity, with a twinkle in his eye, but above all with the full love of his family and friends,” read a statement from Fafard’s partner, Alyce Hamon.

Locally, Fafard is known for his work on the wolf statue that stands in downtown Prince Albert. Fundraising for the statue, which was commissioned by the Mann Art Gallery, led to the popular Wolf Back annual beer and wine tasting event.

Fafard’s family will be holding a private celebration of life at a later date.

Instead of flowers, the family is encouraging people to donate to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation’s palliative care services in Fafard’s memory.
