New lab to bolster outdoor research at Hannin Creek
A new research lab has opened at the educational facility at Hannin Creek on Candle Lake.
The new lab was added to the existing Education and Applied Research Centre, which has already benefitted students and researchers for over 50 years. It’s expected to further research into natural resources, engineering, and human services, according to officials from Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, who are partners on the project.
“It’s an opportunity to take what may be learned in a book from a theoretical perspective and apply that to a hands-on, real-world environment,” Jamie Hilts, a dean with Saskatchewan Polytech, told paNOW. “Be it within the four different seasons, and within the plant or animal kingdom, it allows people to work in an environment which is in nature itself.”
The new laboratory classroom and research complex features a wet lab, allowing students to dissect and study animals and flora.
