Swift Current RCMP officer facing drug charges

RCMP have arrested one of their own.

In a release sent out Wednesday, RCMP reported Michael Chachula, 31, was arrested by the force’s Major Crime Unit in Swift Current.

The seven-year veteran is charged with trafficking cocaine and ecstasy.

Police report they began an investigation after getting a complaint against Chachula in April, 2014.  They brought in the Moose Jaw Police Service to investigate.

While the initial complaint wasn’t related to narcotics, the Moose Jaw police’s investigation uncovered evidence linking Chachula to drugs.  RCMP opted to investigate that evidence themselves due to the equipment and expertise needed.

They began their investigation in October, 2014. Chachula was charged and suspended. In addition to the criminal charges, Chachula is also being investigated for breaching the RCMP’s code of conduct.

Chachula is due to appear in court in Swift Current Feb. 18.
