Food Bank hoping to scare up donations this Halloween

A group of local students has partnered with the Prince Albert Food Bank to scare up food donations in the hopes of filling hungry bellies this Halloween.

Nursing students from the University of Saskatchewan are encouraging trick or treaters of all ages to collect non-perishable food items around Prince Albert to help fight hunger. The initiative is calling for students, sports teams and community groups to get involved to help out.

“Food security is becoming quite a big issue and the food bank runs only on donations and they need more donations to be able to keep getting food to people who need it,” said Hailey Holmes, a nursing student who is helping to organize the food drive. “We all live here, and we’re trying to do good for all our residents.”

Kerry Ramsdell with the Prince Albert Food Bank said the location is always in need of donations from the community to help those less fortunate. Ramsdell said the Halloween fundraiser is a great way for local youth and families to support the wider community.

“They’re always in need, but the winter time, the colder months, are more important,” Ramsdell said. 

Those wanting to take part in the fundraiser can print off a volunteer ID badge from the P.A. Food Bank’s website, or pick one up at their location downtown. Holmes said collecting food for the less fortunate can be a great team-building activity.

Volunteers can then drop off their donated food items at the food bank during regular business hours.
