Wheat Kings wheel out a 5-1 win over the Raiders

The Raiders had trouble dealing with the Wheat Kings speed all night in a 5-1 road loss.

Goalie Rylan Parenteau’s brilliance wasn’t enough to fend off a relentless Brandon attack. The 18 year old netminder stopped Braylon Shmyr on a penalty shot just 37-seconds into the game and a Morgan Klimchuk breakaway moments later. Parenteau’s big stops included a back door feed to Tim McGauley, sweeping the puck off the goal line to deny Nolan Patrick a tap in and a second period glove snag off John Quennville during a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush in the second period. There were very few gimme’s for Parenteau among the 35 shots he faced.

The Wheat Kings opened the scoring on a McGauley deflection of an Eric Roy point shot midway through the first period and Tanner Kaspick jammed in a rebound late in the opening frame to record his first WHL goal. Rihards Bukarts scored on a breakaway early in the second period to make it 3-0 as the Wheat Kings worked their quick transition game all night. Reid Duke also scored on a Brandon breakaway as he snuck in behind the Raider defense to take a pass from the end boards in Wheat King territory. The Raiders didn’t seem to have an answer for the Wheat King stretch passes which were often banked off the boards with the recieving player in full flight.

McGauley added a power play goal late in the third period to round out the Brandon scoring. Raider winger Kris Schmidli roofed a backhand after working off the boards into the slot, the lone blemish on Wheat King goalie Alex Moodie’s 31 save night.
