Riders trade Ricky Foley to Toronto Argonauts

Jan 24, 2015 | 2:52 PM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have been looking for a big middle linebacker for well over a year. On Saturday, they found their man, but it came at a heavy cost.

The Riders announced they’ve traded defensive end Ricky Foley to the Toronto Argonauts for linebacker Shea Emry.

It’s a surprising move in a way as Foley and the Riders just agreed on a contract extension during the off-season. One that they had been working on for quite some time with reports of that deal being worked on throughout the regular season.

Foley joined the Riders just before the 2013 season as a free agent after winning the Grey Cup with the Argos in 2012.

Emry is a seven year veteran of the CFL who was originally selected in the first round of the 2008 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. He then went on to play for the Alouettes six seasons before signing as a free agent with the Argos in 2014.

In his career, Emry has registered 333 tackles, 43 special teams tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 11 quarterback sacks and four interceptions in 112 games.

Emry won the Grey Cup with the Alouettes in 2009 and 2010.
