Stefanie Lawton has successfully defended her Saskatchewan women’s curling crown.

Lawton and her Saskatoon rink defeated Regina’s Michelle Englot 6-3 in the final of the Viterra Sakatchewan Scotties on Sunday afternoon in Assiniboia.

Lawton and Englot were seeded first and second coming into the annual championship and did not disappoint all week. Lawton came into the playoffs on the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record while Englot’s team was just behind them at 4-1.

Englot did get the better of Lawton on Saturday as she defeated Lawton 5-4 in page playoff game that features the wining team from each pool.

Lawton had to face Lana Vey and her team earlier on Sunday afternoon with the winner advancing to the final. A game Lawton would go on to win 8-6.

The final itself did not get off to roaring start with each team trying to blank the first three ends, with two unsuccessful attempts leading to a 1-1 score through three. Lawton would score the only duece of the game in the fourth taking a 3-1 lead. Englot did respond with one before the fifth end break but remained down one without the hammer to open the second half of the game. The sixth end would be blanked with Lawton extending her lead to 4-2 in the seventh. Englot only managed a single again with the hammer in the eighth. Lawton would steal one in both the ninth and 10th for the 6-3 win.

Lawton will now represent Saskatchewan at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw next month. The win is Lawton’s fourth provincial title as a skip and second in a row.

The last time Lawton played in Moose Jaw, she won the 2012 Canada Cup of Curling.
