VIDEO: Lumber truck rolls over on Hwy 2

A truck loaded with logs rolled over on Highway 2 and blocked traffic for hours on Monday and sent one person to the hospital.

The accident was reported around noon and it involved three vehicles, two smaller vehicles and a truck. A collision happened between two of the vehicles and led to the truck roll over on the highway north of White Star Road.

The highway’s southbound lane was partially blocked by the truck and another vehicle involved in the accident. The logs rolled into the ditch at the side of the road.

One person, the occupant of the truck, was taken to the hospital, according to the Prince Albert RCMP. They did not have any information about the driver’s condition.

The RCMP, Buckland Fire and Rescue and Parkland Ambulance responded to the scene.

Buckland Fire and Rescue Chief Jim Miller said they were on the scene for about four hours. He said no one was badly injured.

He said one of the things that Buckland Fire and Rescue does when there is an accident is to try to prevent a second accident from happening.

“A lot of times, there’ll be an accident scene that causes another accident and that’s what one of our main … issues are. We try and assist the RCMP whenever we can. It’s a very busy highway going north, with lots of traffic at different times of the day and different times of the year,” he said.

The firefighters blocked off traffic in both directions and diverted it.  A towing company hoisted the truck upright and out of the ditch.

“The logs itself were on the edge and they weren’t impeding traffic, so we really didn’t worry about it too much,” Miller said.

And the conditions outdoors were favourable for the first responders. Miller said Monday was one of the better days.

“It could have been 30 below with fairly strong wind chill, which it wasn’t. The highway wasn’t terribly icy, so, it was a sunny day…” he said.

He said the most important thing is that the people involved in the accident were not seriously hurt. But it’s also important for other drivers near an accident scene to obey the speed limit and follow the directions for diversions.

According to the Prince Albert RCMP, the detour was in effect until about 5 p.m. and the logs were cleaned up and the truck was removed from the road.

The accident and its cause remains under investigation.
