Mother and kids escape house fire in Regina

Feb 3, 2015 | 7:50 AM

A fire on Monday has destroyed one house and damaged another in Regina.

Regina Fire and Protective Services were called to the 1400 block of Cameron Street just after 2 p.m. on Monday to respond to the house fire.

Melanie Stonechild was inside the second house with her three kids when her sister drove by and saw the flames.

“We were home and my sister drove by and said, ‘You’ve got to get out,’ and I said, ‘Why?’ I didn’t know my house was on fire,” she said.

The family got out safely, but firefighters told Stonechild she could not go back inside the house at this point. She said she had only lived there for six months.

There are no clear details about whether anyone was living in the other house at the time of the fire. But firefighters on the scene did a sweep of the property and did not find anyone inside.

The fire marshal, Randy Ryba, said the 911 call came from EMS who were driving by and noticed the smoke. It was a stubborn fire to battle in the cold and there was even a partial collapse of the main floor of the first home.

“We will probably secure the scene until morning. It looks like we’re going to lose the sun before we even get a chance to investigate,” said Ryba.

The first home has extensive damage and fire investigators are still working to determine a cause. The fire breached the wall of Stonechild’s home and also caused significant damage to the second floor.
