Lac La Ronge Indian Band awarded $75K in settlement

The ink is still drying on a $75,000 settlement reached between Lac La Ronge Indian Band and SaskPower.

The settlement is the result of nearly two years of talks and relates to a transmission line built from Key Lake to Island Falls, Sask.

“Some of the trappers had to move their family cabins from their traditional camps and the place where they carry out their way of life,” said Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.

The initial discussions about the project began in 2012. At the time, a series of community meetings were held and the impact on trappers was identified.

The money flows from SaskPower’s Trapper’s Compensation Program.  SaskPower is responsible for allocating the money to the individual funds, and each cheque may be different based on the level of impact on the trapper.

Cook-Searson said the trappers were happy with what they received.

“They had initially wanted a lot more than what they received, but at the end of the day they accepted what was on the table with compensation,” she said.  “They signed on their own behalf to accept the compensation.”

According to SaskPower’s website, the transmission line known as I1K and I2P, was built to help meet the growing power needs in northern Saskatchewan.  It replaced the previous line that had been built in the early 1990s.

The total length of the line is 300 kilometres.
