Ness Creek set to begin Thursday

Jul 16, 2012 | 5:05 PM

Festival-goers are counting down the days to this year’s Ness Creek Music Festival.

The event that supports and encourages Canadian arts and maintains at least a 50 per cent ratio of Saskatchewan talent is set to begin Thursday.

“Ticket sales are going wonderfully this year, we are hoping for a sellout,” said Deborah Aitken, entertainment co-ordinator for the festival.

This is the 22nd year for the festival that features more than 20 main stage performances, a workshop stage, eco-village, artisan market, community kitchen, children's area, drum and dance circle, community sharing circle, after hours tent and more.

Something new festival-goers might find interesting this year at the sharing circle is the Human Library, which Aitkin explains is an opportunity for individuals to sit down with someone of another culture and hear their stories.

“We have invited out a group of performers that come from the newcomers community in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan and we are pairing them with First Nations, Metis performers from around Big River and Saskatchewan, providing opportunities for our festival-goers to learn more about these different cultures that are present in our newcomers community,” Aitken said.

“Instead of reading a book you sit down with that person and for 20 minutes you listen to their story and they will obviously, because of their different backgrounds, have a wide range of interesting stories.”

The lineup for this year’s Ness Creek event features a variety of local talent including Prince Albert’s own Almighty Voice.

“Really the best of what we have in Saskatchewan is coming up to Ness Creek this year. It’s a wonderful lineup,” Aitken said.

“Every year they say this is the best lineup ever, but this year we are really confident in all the programming that is happening on the site and we know it is a not to miss year for sure.”

Aitken said the weather is expected to be beautiful during this year’s festival. She said there is going to be a new moon and there could be some excellent opportunities to see the stars or maybe even some northern lights.

The gates at the festival site, which is just outside of Big River, will open at noon on Thursday.
