Vigil held for Radisson boy killed in train accident

If it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to mourn one. Hundreds gathered in Radisson Friday night to mourn a young life cut short by a train accident.

More than 200 people gathered on Main Street outside the town hall in Radisson for a vigil to remember Ethan Manson.

They held each other and wiped away tears for the 10-year-old whose life was cut short last weekend. Prayers were followed by a moment of silence.

As the sun set in brilliant pink, the songs of bagpipes and 200 red and white balloons, released by Ethan’s classmates, filled the air.

Meanwhile, the train tracks that run through the town were quiet. CN rail halted all trains for the vigil as a sign of respect for the family.

“Our hearts are broken, we love you so much honey, love Mum and Dad xx. We will always remember how fun and loving you were, goodbye little brother, love Jordan and Kane xx,” the family’s obituary reads.

Ethan was born in Leeds, England. He, along with his father Bryan, mother Sharon, and two brothers, Jordan and Kane, moved to Ontario in 2006 and to Radisson in 2009.

Ethan was killed last Saturday after he and a 13-year-old boy were hit by a train at a railway crossing just east of the town. The death has rocked the small community of 500.

Radisson Mayor David Summers said Bryan is an active volunteer in the community and he would often see the boys playing around town.

Summers said the death has been particularly hard on the volunteer fire fighters who were the first on scene and knew Ethan well.

The family has asked donations be made to the Radisson Volunteer Fire Department.

There is a fund at CIBC Bank to help the family cover any costs.
