Frank Dunn named 2015 Legacy Award recipient

Mar 1, 2016 | 3:09 PM

Frank Dunn, owner of Frank Dunn Toyota, will soon be able to add one more award to his trophy case.

Dunn will be formally recognized March 24 at the annual Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce Legacy Brunch.

“The company that I’m with is humbling and I guess they picked me because they must be short,” Dunn said, referring to the past list of Legacy Award recipients.

“I’ve always loved the community and been a part of it,” Dunn said. “When you enjoy the people you work with and the people you deal with, it makes the job a lot easier.”

In 1958, Dunn was still a child when he moved with his family to Prince Albert from Victoria, BC.

The family would operate what became known as McGavin’s Toastmaster Bakery, before branching out to take over the Imperial Oil bulk station in 1965 and later, a trailer sales business. The family also dabbled in other ventures, including milking machines and Suzuki motorcycles before bringing the Toyota franchise to Prince Albert in 1971.

Frank Dunn Toyota remains one of only a handful of franchises across the country that is still operated by the original family of owners.

In addition to his time working in the auto sector, Dunn has also coached competitive diving and gymnastics in both Prince Albert and Calgary. He has received awards for his work in the athletic community.

His father was instrumental in the construction of the Frank J. Dunn Pool, the city’s first indoor pool and diving tank.  And so following in his father’s footsteps, Dunn created his own legacy, the Frank Dunn Triathalon, one of the country’s longest-running events.

“It’s crazy how time flies and how insignificant it seemed at the time, and how powerful an event it became over the years,” Dunn said.

At 62-years-of-age, Dunn said he has no plans to slow down and plans to just try and enjoy the summers more.

The 26th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards Gala will be held April 21.

Tickets for both the Legacy Brunch and the 26th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards are now available by contacting the Chamber office at 306-764-6222 or registering online at www.princealbertchamber.com.
