MADD red ribbons make a powerful statement

Red ribbons are making their appearance in Prince Albert as part of MADD’s holiday season campaign.

It’s the time of year when the rate of impaired-related crashes increases.

P.A. MADD chapter president Trina Cockle said the Project Red Ribbon initiative runs Nov.1 through Jan.7, and the ribbon represents a strong statement.

“The red ribbon signifies your promise not to drive impaired and also as a reminder to the lives that have been lost due to impaired driving,” she told paNOW.

The ribbons can be picked up at boxes at Coop store locations across the city and they can be displayed on a car’s antenna, or on a purse, backpack or wherever it can be seen and create an awareness, according to Cockle.

“It absolutely can spark a conversation,” Cockle said. “Whether that’s between a parent and their soon-to-be-driving child, or anyone else for that matter, as long as it’s creating awareness, we’re super happy.”

Cockle said the ribbon boxes allow the public to make a small donation with all the funds raised staying local.

“None of that money goes anywhere but MADD Prince Albert and helps us keep going with awareness, education and victim support services.”

Operation Red Nose into its 35th year

Meanwhile Operation Red Nose in collaboration with SGI launched the 35th annual campaign Monday offering a safe ride service to five Saskatchewan communities. The service will be available from Nov.30 to Dec.31.

In a media release, the organization said volunteers provided more than 2,000 safe rides each year in the province, in addition to helping raise funds for local youth and amateur sports programs.

“We’re pleased to be working with Operation Red Nose again this year, and want to thank the many volunteers who take time out of their evenings to ensure everyone makes it home safely during the holidays,” said Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave. “This time of year is about making memories with friends and loved ones. Let’s ensure they are good memories. With so many easy options for a safe ride home, there is zero reason for anyone to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
