Prince Albert Christmas Market welcomes shoppers

Nov 10, 2018 | 2:15 PM

People looking to get an early start on their Christmas shopping got the chance Saturday.

Plaza 88 Events Centre welcomed around 45 vendors for the Prince Albert Christmas market.

The event has been a regular one for the past three years. But this year is the first where Plaza 88 has taken the lead in organizing it.

“We took on the trade show … it was originally run by Gateway Events,” said Lisa Stead, events coordinator for the centre.

Stead explained the previous organizer had moved away from the city, but had worked closely with the them to put on the market.

Overall Stead told paNOW that organizers were happy with the number of people who had come out as of Saturday afternoon.

“It’s very nice and full in here and we have done a lot of advertising to get the word out,” she said.

The vendors who were on hand for the market were selling a wide range of merchandise. This ranged from food products to art and clothing.

One of the vendors, Grant Schmidt of GC Honey bees, was selling a variety of products.

“A lot of flavours, three different kinds of honey,” he said.

Besides honey to eat, Schmidt was also selling candles and lip balm, which were also made from honey. The honey is produced locally, with the bee colonies located east of the city.

There were also artists in attendance. One of them, Trina Stull from Hudson Bay, had come to the market to sell some of her paintings.

“I like to do animals, in … bright colours, a little bit of humour to them,” she said. Some of her paintings depict people doing what she called simple pleasurable activities. Another one of her paintings contained a sun flower with a farm back drop.

Stull found her art was getting a wide array of interest from a wide array of people ranging from kids to adults. She said most appreciated the bright colours of her work.

“It tends to bring a smile to people’s faces when they walk by,” she said. Stull explained the Christmas Market provides a good opportunity for people like her who live in smaller centres.

“The more people who see the art work, you know the more likely you are to sell something,” she said.

The Christmas Market will be run until late Sunday afternoon. Plaza 88 has another market planned for December.
