21-year-old Henry wins second May Day Masters since 2013

May 18, 2015 | 6:09 PM

He’s only 21 years old, but Prince Albert’s Brett Henry is already forming his own tournament dynasty at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

In the last three years, Henry has won two May Day Masters tournaments including this weekend’s at Cooke. His previous victory came in 2013 when he was just 19 years old.

Henry said one of his secrets to success in the May Days is his ability to know how the course reacts early on in the season.

“The greens are pretty hard right now, so you can usually land them near the front of the greens and let them roll up,” said Henry. “Your chip shots, you can usually just let them all run out, they don’t get much check this time of year.

“You can let them roll 30 feet and you can get them to the hole easy if you’re playing well.”

Through 11 holes in his championship round on Monday, Henry was -4 after a stellar start to his round, but couldn’t keep it up for the remainder of the round. He still finished with a 72, which was tied for the second best round of the day.

“I kinda fell apart when I found out I was ahead quite a bit there,” said Henry. “I had to make a couple good clutch par putts on the back nine to at least keep my round together.”

Henry and Klughart were both tied at 144 heading into the final day. Klughart shot a 79 on Day 3 to finish third at 223. Colin Coben, who was one back of the leaders, finished second with 221.
