Prince Albert comedian making laughs overseas

A Prince Albert comedian brought his act to the Middle East over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Kelly Taylor spent Oct. 10 to the Oct. 14 in Kuwait and Oman entertaining troops for the second time.

“This is the last one in the Middle East because they’re pulling out. This is what they call … the best of team Canada. I was the only comedian and then we had some NHL hockey players; Tiger Williams—the older penalty guy, Troy Crowder—another tough guy, Tony Currie—an old NHL guy,” he said, listing several others on the tour including singers, announcers and a NHL team president.

For Taylor, the best memories of the trip included listening to old hockey stories from the former players on the trip and seeing the troops again.

“There was at one point in the flight, because it’s so far over there, Brad May and Brian Burke they were together when they won the [Stanley] Cup in Anaheim, so I got round-by-round breakdown of all their way of the run of the Stanley Cup,” he said.

In Kuwait, he said they even had the opportunity to play ball hockey against the troops.

“We go over there and they thank us for coming, they’re like ‘thank you so much’ and it feels like the most awkward thank you. They’re thanking us for coming there for four days and you guys are over here giving your whole life for it.”

Taylor hopes the next tour for the crew will be to Alert in Canada’s far North.

“Always have [the troops] in mind in anything we do. Those guys are over there so we can have all freedoms over here. Freedom doesn’t come free,” he said.

“It’s like they’ve given their life so everyone else can have a better life.”
