Montreal Lake Cree Nation to host no-confidence vote

The future of three Montreal Lake Councillors hinges on the result of a no-confidence vote.

Robert Lavallee, Debbie Kasheep and Fred Halkett are listed as respondents in a flyer sent to paNOW outlining the details of a no-confidence vote to be hosted on May 2.

“Please be advised that as [per] the Montreal Lake Cree Nation Election Act, the Elders Executive Advisory Council and the Appeal have called for a no-confidence vote,” the poster states.

The information sheet outlines the requirements to remove the community’s chief or councillors. In order to be upheld, the motion requires 50 per cent plus one of the ballots submitted to be in favor of the action.

Clifford Bird was listed as the Electoral Officer for the May 2 vote, which takes place at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial School in Montreal Lake. When reached, Bird said he was in a conference and unable to talk about the no-confidence motion. paNOW will update this story to reflect his comments as to why the no-confidence vote was called when they’re available.

All three respondents were sworn in during a ceremony hosted at the Little Red River Reserve back in February of this year.

The general election which saw Lavallee, Kasheep and Halket take office was called for by Edward Henderson and disputed by Frank J Roberts, both of whom have told paNOW they are the rightful chief of the community following a series of appeals and elections over the last 18 months.
