Fire at La Ronge store unrelated to wildfires: official

Jul 1, 2015 | 10:07 AM

A fire broke out in the La Ronge Field’s store on Tuesday evening, but it was unrelated to the wildfires burning in the area, according to Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.

The fire remains under investigation and no one was hurt.

RCMP have released a statement, saying the fire was not deliberately set.

With “extra resources” in the area due to the wildfires – the La Ronge Fire Department, Rapid Response and civil services – there was a quick response to the store fire, Cook-Searson said via telephone on Wednesday morning.

As for the wildfires, she said they would be getting a fire update later in the morning, now that helicopters are able to fly.

All aircraft were grounded on Tuesday because of the thick smoke.

There is still smoke in the community, Cook-Searson said.

As well, with the improved conditions, a few affected highways have been reopened. Highway 102 north of La Ronge is open in both directions, as is Highway 2 south of La Ronge.

From Pinehouse to Beauval, a convoy service is available, Cook-Searson said.

More to follow.
