Paper Excellence vying for pulp mill

Nov 10, 2010 | 11:21 AM

Asia Pulp and Paper is confirming that its affiliate, Paper Excellence, is expressing interest in re-opening the Prince Albert pulp mill.

A spokesman with APP, who asked not to be named, confirmed Paper Excellence is in preliminary discussions with Domtar to purchase the shuttered facility.

Paper Excellence, is a Netherlands-based company and is associated to APP. It owns two Canadian pulp facilities including the mill in Meadow Lake.

A working memorandum of understanding between Paper Excellence and the pulp mill's union is in place and will be reviewed and voted on, said the spokesperson.

paNOW obtained an email issued by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) Local 1120 to its members regarding the proposed sale.

It says a tentative agreement reached with Paper Excellence will be discussed and voted on during two meetings scheduled this weekend in Prince Albert.

The union has not commented on the letter.

Neither Domtar nor the provincial government has responded to interview requests regarding Paper Excellence being a contender.
