Icehawks disappointing in 4-3 loss to Chiefs; Bears double Sharks 6-3

Jan 15, 2014 | 9:38 PM

“We blew it, we blew two points that were really important to us.”

The Prince Albert Icehawks head coach Kim Dryka was as angry and animated as ever after he saw his team drop a 4-3 loss to the Delisle Chiefs Wednesday at the Kinsmen.

One source of the frustration was how big of a game it was. If the Icehawks would have won, they would have been tied with the Chiefs for the last Prairie Junior Hockey League playoff position, but instead, are four points back with the loss.

The other of course, is how they gave up their last two goals to watch a 3-2 third-period lead evaporate.

Dalyn Hoiness and Kynan Tarnowski scored on seemingly innocent shots to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead with just over four minutes in the game. Dryka feels strongly that his goaltender Tyler Gordon should have had those.

“Then all of a sudden, you have Tyler Gordon fall asleep on the last two goals,” said Dryka. “He’s more concentrating on the net being off [very common at the Kinsmen]. Even if the net’s off, you have to play until the whistle goes.

“The last two goals were bad ones and Gordon should have had them. He didn’t compete on the last two, and we lose 4-3.”

Even before the last two goals were scored, the Chiefs seemed to have gained the momentum with a fight. Icehawk Darian Clarke, an important forward in the Icehawks’ top-six, got in a scrap with Chiefs defenceman Tyson Leard midway through the third and Dryka said that hurt PA for the rest of the game.

Icehawks forward Brett Boyer entered Wednesday’s game with more goals (32) than any Chiefs player had total points. Josh Reinbolt and Mark Ganter were tied with 27 points each.

Chiefs forward Brayden Atkinson attended the Prince Albert Raiders training camp this season. He had three assists in the game. He has 12 points in as many games with the Chiefs after starting the year with the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the SJHL.

The Icehawks have their next two games on the road, facing the Saskatoon Westleys on Sunday and the Tri-Town Thunder on Wednesday. They’ll return to the Kinsmen on Jan. 25 to face the Southern Rebels from Assiniboia.

Bears 6 Sharks 3

Prince Albert A&W Bears forward Tylor Lindsay exploded for a hat trick, five-point night in a 6-3 win over the Battlefords Sharks Wednesday at the Art Hauser Centre.

The five-point effort now gives Lindsay the Bears’ team point lead with 19 points in 21 games. She’s also now second on the team in goals with 10, one behind defender Brooke Hobson who has 11.

Also scoring for the Bears were Caitlyn Welder, Kendra Winny and Jessica Lutz.

That’s the Bears fifth straight win. They’ve also won all four games they’ve played in the 2014 calendar year as well.

The Bears, who are in second place, will travel to take on the Saskatoon Stars for their next contest Jan. 26.
