Saskatchewan Votes 2011: Sask Party majority

Brad Wall arrived to a crowd of cheers in Swift Current after being declared winner of the 27th Saskatchewan election.

“This Saskatchewan that you have built, is stronger and prouder than it has ever been and we are not going back,” Wall said standing with his wife, children and parents.

Lingenfelter resigns following loss to Marchuk

Lingenfelter appeared at NDP headquarters in Regina where he announced to media following his speech he was stepping down as leader of the Saskatchewan NDP.

With 58 of 58 polls reporting NDP leader Dwain Lingenfelter has lost his seat in Regina Douglas Park to the Saskatchewan Party's Russ Marchuk. Marchuk had 4,353 votes to Lingenfelter's 3,471. Deputy leader Deb Higgins has also lost her seat to Greg Lawrence in Moose Jaw-Wakamow.

In other upsets, Gene Makowsky has been declared the winner of Regina Dewdney over the NDP incumbant Kevin Yates. In Regina Northeast the Sask Party's Kevin Doherty takes a longtime NDP seat, but incumbant Ron Harper was not running. Another long-time NDP seat belonging to the NDP's Kim Trew who retired at the end of the last session, Regina Coronation Park has been taken by the Sask Party's Mark Docherty. and in Regina Walsh Acres, long-time NDP MLA Sandra Morin has lost to Warren Steinley.

Indian Head-Milestone was the first returning office to report results with a lead for Sask Party incumbant Don McMorris. With many polls left to go, the Saskatchewan Party is leading with 48 seats, the NDP follows with 10. That's a drastic change from the 2007 election where the NDP held 20 of the seats.

Pundits and analysis

The average voter turn out tends to be about 77 per cent in Saskatchewan. Garcea doubts voter turnout will get into the high seventies or eighties. He said wonders if the province will be able to crack the 60 per cent mark.
