Festival contest challenges residents to be-dazzle their yards

Prince Albert city residents are being encouraged to transform their front yards, as part of a new winter festival contest.

Organizers of the Prince Albert Winter Festival have created the “WinterScape” contest. Donna Barr, Publicity Director for the Festival, said the board was searching for ways to get the whole community more involved in the winter festival leading up to it and during it.

“I was just watching the snow one day and the word WinterScape came into my mind and I thought wouldn’t it be great if everybody in town was doing something in their front yard to celebrate winter,” she said. “There are a lots of people in town creating Christmas displays and it would be great if they could just tweak them and turn them into a winter festival display.”

According to contest details, photos of the displays can be uploaded to the winter festival website from Dec. 23 to Jan. 31. There are three categories for entries. The Be-Dazzled category will feature Christmas displays that have been transformed; Natural Art Scape entries will use natural foliage to create a display; and Barr said the third category involves snow-critters.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s an animal, a bird, a super hero, a cartoon character, or just something fun in the yard,” she said.

Beginning in early February, the public will be allowed to vote on the three basic categories, and the winner will be announced during the winter festival which runs from Feb. 10 to Feb. 24.

First prize winners of the Be-Dazzled and Natural Art scape contests will each be awarded a six show festival ticket package which includes tickets to the Country North Show, Rock Show Experience, Voices of the North, Gospel Show and Youth Extravaganza. The second prize is two tickets to a show of their choice. The top ten entries in the snow critters contest will eceive a $40 gift card from Humpty’s. All entries will also have a chance to win a Raiders Hockey Weekend Family package.

“We’re hoping the contest will get families doing something together and also get them that exposure,” Barr said.
