Ottawa lists Roberts Bank port expansion in B.C. as project of national interest
DELTA — The planned Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion, which is expected to add 2.4 million containers of capacity at the Port of Vancouver, the largest in the country, has officially been named a project of national interest.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the move provides certainty for a project that’s a key part of Ottawa’s drive to expand and diversify trade, including a goal to double exports to markets other than the United States by 2035.
“When you’re dealing with projects of this scope and size, and cost, time is money. And after 13 years of looking at this from every possible angle, it is time to decide and move on,” MacKinnon told a news conference in Delta, B.C., on Friday.
The existing port is approaching the limit of its container handling capacity, he said.
