Large military presence expected to fill Prince Albert Armoury for Pte. Farrell funeral

Oct 30, 2026 | 10:45 AM

Of the 950 people that the Prince Albert Armoury can hold, at least 500 will be members of the Canadian Armed Forces as Private Shaun Farrell is laid to rest on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Farrell will be buried with full military honours following his death during a training accident at CFB Wainwright on October 17. Farrell died along with three other soldiers after wind gusts took a smoldering grass fire and sent it towards soldiers in training who were unable to get out of the way in time.

Many other soldiers are recovering from burns in multiple Alberta hospitals.

Local service members from the North Saskatchewan Regiment who are helping with co-ordination have asked the city to close Exhibition Drive directly in front of the Armoury, beginning at 9 am and continuing until 1 pm.

Any traffic from people who are attending will need to detour around the Exhibition barns and park by the Exhibition centre, the Midway or Dave Steuart Arena.

Farrell was a member of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. Members were in Wainwright training for deployment.

The service begins at 11 a.m. and will be live streamed, and members of the public are encouraged to watch it there.
