VICTORIA — Canada’s Kerri Einarson defeated Korea’s Kyeong-Ae Kim 6-3 on Sunday to capture the women’s title at the GSOC Co-Op Invitational curling event.

Einarson’s team from Gimli, Man., opened the contest with singles in each of the first two ends. After Kim scored two in the third to tie the game, Einarson countered with two in the fourth.

Kim cut Einarson’s lead to 4-3 with a single in the fifth end but the Canadians cemented the victory with their final two in sixth. The Canadian team consists of lead Jocelyn Peterman, second Karlee Burgess, third Shannon Birchard and skip Einarson.

It was Einarson’s seventh Grand Slam championship and her crew collected $38,000 from the prize purse in the season’s first Grand Slam event, held at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Einarson advanced to the final with an 8-4 semifinal win over Eun-Ji Gim of Korea on Saturday. Kim edged Switzerland’s Xenia Schwaller 7-6 in the other contest.

Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland claimed the men’s title on Sunday night with a 7-3 win over Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway in six ends.

Schwaller scored a single in the first end, and then after blanking the second the Swiss skip stole four in the third to go ahead 5-0. Ramsfjell scored one in the fourth, but Schwaller came back with two in the fifth to make it 7-1.

After Ramsfjell was held to a deuce in the sixth the teams shook hands.
