No charges against RCMP officers after death in custody on James Smith Cree Nation
Saskatchewan’s police watchdog has found no grounds to lay criminal charges against RCMP officers after a 29-year-old man died in custody on James Smith Cree Nation in April 2025.
An autopsy determined the man died from positional asphyxia combined with acute methamphetamine and cocaine toxicity, according to the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team’s report.
The report, signed Oct. 9, concluded police had lawful grounds to take the man into custody and provided timely and appropriate care when they discovered he was in medical distress.
Melfort RCMP received the first of several calls around 7:55 a.m. on April 28, 2025, reporting the man had discharged bear spray inside an occupied home. A family member who called police was coughing and reported the man was agitated and had been using methamphetamine.
