With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Burtney. Mary slipped away peacefully with her family by her side on September 30, 2026, at the age of 97.

Mary was born March 21, 1929, to Alex and Pearl Maruschak. She grew up on a farm near Vonda, Saskatchewan.

On October 8, 1950, she married William Burtney and together they farmed near St. Denis, Saskatchewan. They were blessed with three children, Bernie, Joanna, and Elaine. In 1967, they moved east of Prince Albert where they continued a mixed farming operation. As a farm wife, Mary worked hard helping her husband with various farm work, raising chickens, milking cows, and shoveling grain, all while tending a large garden, caring for her children, and always providing hot meals for her family.

She lived a quiet life but was always welcoming and eager to feed everyone who entered her home. No one ever left her house hungry. Refusing her generous portions of dessert was NOT an option, as Mary would say, “It’s just a little piece!”.

After her husband’s passing, she dedicated her time to helping her children, grandchildren, and of course, tending to her garden (no weed ever survived her daily inspection).

When her health deteriorated, she moved in with her daughter Elaine, and son-in-law, Don Flannigan, who devotedly cared for her until her last breath.

Mary will be lovingly remembered by her son, Bernie (Yvonne) Burtney; her daughters, Joanna Hulowski, and Elaine (Don) Flannigan; her grandchildren, Nicholas (Kora) Burtney, Pamela Burtney, Steven Burtney (Morgan Bell), Lorne Hulowski, Ken (Connie) Hulowski, Karen (Tom) Foster, Sheila (Jeff) Campbell, and Ryan (Stacy) Flannigan; her great-grandchildren, Ryder, Jemma, and Kendyl Burtney, Brooke (Jared) Greening, Braden, Tayah and Jaxson Hulowski, Zeke Foster, Cienna Voloshin. She is also survived by her brother, Harry Maruschuk, and sister-in-law, Virgina Maruschuk.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Pearl Maruschak; husband, William Burtney; son-in-law, Jerry Hulowski; granddaughter, Jennifer Flannigan; grandson, Dennis Flannigan; siblings, Mike, Bill (Olga), Tony (Sally), Nick (Loyola), Andy, Anne (Frank), and Pauline (Joe); her sisters-in-law, Helen (Joe), Jean (Bill), Julia (Jack), Phyllis (Tony); Sister Victoria, Elizabeth, Marcella, Pauline (Michael), and Emily (Alec).

A Divine Liturgy for Mary will be held at 10:00 AM on October 14, 2026, at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church, located 770 14^th Street West in Prince Albert, SK. Interment will follow at South Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of other tributes, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church, or to the Rose Garden Hospice.
