Montreal Lake Cree Nation celebrates opening of Elders’ cabins

Oct 9, 2026 | 6:02 AM

Some new doors have opened for the Elders at Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

A ceremony on Thursday marked the completion of six cabins for men. Housing director Janelle Naytowhow said there was a need identified.

“We realized we have a lot of Elders in our community that can’t get their own housing because they don’t have families, and we wanted to provide our Elders with a home for themselves and a safe place to live.”

To help provide additional feelings of safety and security, the six small homes are surrounded by fencing.

The project was the dream of late councillor Arnold Naytowhow, and the total cost for 10 cabins was about $1 million. The other four cabins are for the Elder women and are situated throughout the community.

Russell Bird lives in one of the cabins with his brother, and told paNOW he was brought up on the reserve.

“I’m grateful that I’ve got a place to call my home,” he said.

Bird’s younger brother has been allowed to sleep up in the loft, and Bird indicated he was quite happy to sleep on the hide-a-bed. He was also happy about the fact that he knows all his neighbours.

“If you know the people around you, it makes you happy.”
