Northern Bears dominate in opening game at Canadian Crown tournament

Oct 8, 2026 | 11:15 AM

The Prince Albert Raider Northern Bears are putting other teams on notice following their opening game at the Canadian Crown tournament.

The Bears played in the tournament opener Thursday morning in Devon, Alta., where they slaughtered OHA Penticton 10-0 to kick off the festivities. Prince Albert is looking to recapture the crown this year as they won the first ever installment of the tournament in 2024.

Nine Northern Bears found the scoresheet more than once as Lea Hildebrant led the scoring with a pair of goals and an assist. Ryker Slabaida and Riley Merz both had two goals in the win; Zoey Krienke, Jersey Andersen and Rowan Clement each had a goal and an assist; and Reyn Siklenka, Jana Simonson and Meeya Tait-Sjogren each had two assists.

Bria Ludwig was the other goal scorer for P.A., as Amelia Bernier, Layah Mitchell, Londyn Hoffman, Jayce Miazga, Emma Christison and Adyson Wallin each collected a helper. Kailyn Coulter was sharp when she had to be, stopping all 11 shots she faced for a shutout.

Meanwhile, Penticton netminder Alyssa Seyler played all 60 minutes and made a whopping 55 saves in the loss.

The Northern Bears return to the ice later Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. to face the Calgary International Hockey Academy (CIHA), who lost their first game to the Winnipeg Avros 4-3, also on Thursday morning. Then, P.A. will play Winnipeg at 1 p.m. Friday to close out the round robin before playoffs on Saturday.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

It didn’t take long for P.A. to get on the board an establish a lead, as they caught Penticton on their heels to start the game. The Black and Orange hung five goals on OHA within the first ten minutes of the period, where Slabaida scored twice and Krienke, Clement and Hildebrandt each potted one of their own.

Later, in the second period, Ludwig and Merz got in on the scoring action to make it 7-0 Northern Bears before the midway mark of the frame. The period ended 8-0 though, as Hildebrandt’s second of the game came on the powerplay with just over two minutes to play before the intermission.

More Penticton penalty trouble continued to help Prince Albert as Andersen scored her second of the contest on the man advantage early in the period. In the final minutes, Merz added another one, this time shorthanded for the road to make it a double-digit win as the Northern Bears cruised to a 10-0 win.
