Trial in jeopardy for Little Red River shooting case

Stating there is no likelihood of conviction without testimony from two civilian witnesses, Crown Prosecutor Natasha McLean hinted at the possibility of a stay of proceedings in the trials of Jared Naytowhow and Jackie Morin.

Both trials were scheduled to commence Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, but did not proceed and instead were adjourned to Sept. 24 to allow more time to find the witnesses.

The two accused were jointly charged following a drive-by shooting last January at Little Red River Reserve north of Prince Albert.

While standing outside a residence, the victim was approached by a black SUV. One of the occupants inside the SUV was armed with a firearm and discharged it, injuring the victim.

The black SUV then drove away, and the injured man was taken to hospital by EMS with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature.

Prince Albert RCMP searched the area and located a vehicle matching the SUV’s description outside a separate residence at Little Red River Reserve.

Officers set up containment at the residence and engaged Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team to assist. Naytowhow and Morin exited the residence and were arrested by police.

Naytowhow was charged with multiple gun-related offences, including discharge with intent. He’s also accused of aggravated assault.

Morin was charged with aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm when knowing possession was unauthorized.

While the two civilian witnesses did not appear, a number of RCMP officers did show up to testify.

Patrick McDougall is representing Naytowhow and stated his client has been on remand for over seven-and-a-half months. When asked by Judge Lubyk if the present RCMP officers should testify before adjourning the trial, McDougall said he did not think that would be productive.

Lori Richardson, who is representing Morin, agreed an adjournment should occur to allow more time to track down the alleged civilian witnesses.
