NSL roundup: Wild surprise Rise with 2-2 draw, Roses tame Tide 1-0

BURNABY — Jessica De Filippo’s goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time helped the Vancouver Rise salvage a 2-2 draw with the visiting Calgary Wild in Northern Super League action on Saturday.

Serita Thurton gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute at Swangard Stadium, but Quinn got the hosts on the board when she converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

Kahli Johnson’s goal three minutes before the halftime break snapped a 1-1 deadlock and gave the Wild a 2-1 lead entering the break.

With the tie, the last-place Wild improved to two wins, 12 losses and four draws for 10 points. The fourth-place Rise improved to seven wins, nine losses and two draws for 23 points.

The Rise are two points point ahead of the Halifax Tides, who dropped a 1-0 decision earlier in the day to the Montreal Roses.

The Rise controlled possession (64 per cent) and shots (20-12), albeit the Wild had more on target shots (4-3).

Vancouver took seven of the game’s 13 corners and each side received one yellow card.

ROSES 1 TIDES 0

Anne-Valérie Seto scored 76 minutes into the match and Anna Karpenko stopped four shots to record the clean sheet as the league-leading Montreal Roses trimmed the visiting Halifax Tides 1-0.

Montreal moved into first place with 34 points — one more than the second-place Ottawa Rapid — and outshot the visitors 24-12 (6-4 on target) and took seven of the 11 corners. The Roses controlled possession 54 per cent of the game and received one of three yellow cards handed out in the match.

Defender Sheyenne Allen of the Tides received a red card in the 69th minute, leaving the visitors a player short for the final 21 minutes as they tried to score the equalizer.
