Rosthern, Duck Lake to be without animal control for next week

Those seeking help from animal control in Rosthern or Duck Lake will have to hold onto their requests for service over the next while.

The Town of Rosthern announced on Tuesday that animal control will be shut down beginning Aug. 27 through Sept. 5. The reason being is a simple one, as the person who runs it is taking some time off.

Despite looking after two communities, Rosthern’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Cortney Larsen said they only staff one person for the job as calls for service can be few and far between.

“We just don’t have enough animals for that. This is a very part-time thing,” she explained, adding it’s difficult to find someone to do the job in the first place. “[The current animal control person] is an animal lover and so she’s very willing to do this position.”

The town does have an animal pound that was built and opened in 2016 that features separate kennels for cats and dogs, which is not connected to or associated with the local animal hospital.

Larsen said that the service only recently expanded to Duck Lake just a couple of years ago, after a stray dog problem forced the town to sign a service agreement. The agreement only applies to dogs and does not include covering the nearby Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation.

With no calls for service being handled for the next ten days, Larsen continued that it’s no cause for concern.

“At this time of the year, it’s really not a big issue. There aren’t a lot of stray cats and dogs around, especially during the summer, so they’re not really in danger compared to in the winter if you find a stray animal.”

Another reason that calls for service aren’t being handled by someone else is that the other town staff aren’t equipped for the job, nor is there enough time for them to handle the calls outside of their primary tasks.

The animal control service will return on Sept. 6.
