City of Prince Albert to pay $130,000 following worker injury

It will cost the City of Prince Albert around $130,000 in fines and court surcharges following a guilty plea to a violation of the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Act.

A worker was injured after two concrete blocks slid out of the box of a dump truck in July 2024.

The employee was greasing the box and needed to raise it to finish the job. As the box was going up, the rear tailgate opened and blocks slid out, hitting the employee.

The city pleaded guilty in Prince Albert Provincial Court to the violation, receiving a fine of $92,857 plus a court surcharge of $37,142.

Following the incident, the city changed its protocols regarding hazard assessments, renewed toolbox safety meeting forms, provided more training about safe operating procedures and developed new procedures to track and audit compliance with safety regulations.

Audits have also been done to ensure the workplace is compliant with the new rules and an Occupational Health and Safety Committee has been created.

“This incident serves as a reminder that safety programs and policies are only effective when they are consistently applied in the workplace,” said Don Wood, Health, Safety and Environment Co-ordinator in a news release.

“Following the incident, the City undertook a comprehensive review of its safety practices and implemented additional safeguards. Our focus is on learning from this incident and continually strengthening our safety culture to help prevent similar events in the future.”
