Bertha Amy Ernst

Bertha was born on November 23,1936, in Yankee Valley, south of Shellbrook, SK.

Bertha was the youngest daughter of Henry and Alice Miller. Bertha started her schooling in Rich Valley and completed grade 8 at Foxdale School. She then boarded in Shellbrook to finish her high school as there were no buses at that time.

Bertha and Howard were married on October 17, 1953, at the Holy Trinity Church in Sturgeon Valley. They resided on the farm in Sturgeon Valley and moved to Prince Albert for their retirement years.  In her last years Bertha enjoyed the companionship of Duane Jewitt.  Her main career was being wife, mom and homemaker, but she did hold a few jobs outside the home as the children got older. When the kids were old enough she helped in the fields doing whatever jobs needed doing.  Bertha was a very talented woman, if there was a way she had the will to figure it out.  Her sewing talents were clothing, upholstery, suit making , bridesmaids and wedding dresses.

Bertha was a competitive sports player and played on various ball teams, golfed and she loved curling most of all.  Bertha and Howard loved to camp and fish . They had many trips up to the northern lakes and also did a fly in fish camp. They took a few trips to the U.S. and even to the Bahamas to visit with friends.

Bertha was a member of the Sturgeon Valley Church Group (ACW) as well as a Legion member.  She held the title of President of Tops for a few years. She volunteered working the concession in between games at the Sturgeon Valley picnics and volunteered at the Rawlinson Center where she enjoyed many free concerts.  In recent years reading books became a passion and continued until shortly before her passing.

Bertha is survived by her daughters, Valerie (Ron), Judy (Don), Janet, and daughter-in-law, Phyllis; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Howard Ernst; eldest son, Stanley Ernst, son, Clarence Ernst; son in-law, John Sawatzky; brothers,  Archie, Maurice, Elmer; and sister, Elsie.
