Bring back options for dealing with derelict properties, city council tells staff
Prince Albert city councillors want administration to come back with stronger options for dealing with derelict properties, including a possible tax subclass, clearer definitions and enforcement tools modelled in part on Edmonton’s approach.
The direction came during Monday’s executive committee meeting after councillors said an administration report did not go far enough in outlining ways to reduce the number of vacant, boarded-up and fire-damaged properties in the city.
In May, council asked for information on creating a separate tax subclass that could place a higher tax rate on properties left in poor condition. Councillors said Monday they were not looking for a new revenue source, but for a tool that would push owners to demolish, repair or otherwise deal with neglected buildings.
Coun. Blake Edwards said the intent was to move quickly on a subclass and other tools because neighbourhoods are being affected by properties that have been left unattended for too long.
