Decision reserved on sentence for teen who caused crash in Saskatoon

Judge Lisa Watson has reserved her decision on the sentence for a 14-year old boy involved in a fiery crash on Saskatoon’s Idylwyld Drive in May, at provincial court on Thursday.

In June, the teen – who cannot be named under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act – pleaded guilty to charges including possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop after an accident.

The teen was originally set to be sentenced on July 28, but the case was adjourned to allow time for an additional victim impact statement to be written.

The Crown is seeking a sentence of 10 months in custody and five in the community, followed by 12 months probation. The defence is seeking 24 months of probation and 100 hours of community service.

The teen has been in custody since he was arrested.

Kiefer Ballantyne, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of occupying a motor vehicle knowing it had been taken without the owner’s consent, and received credit for time already served in custody.

According to police, the crash occurred at the intersection of Idylwyld and 58th Street West shortly after 8 a.m. on May 5.

Officers responded after receiving a report from Corman Park Police that a Dodge Durango SUV was being driven erratically and was heading into the city on Highway 11. The SUV was stolen out of Prince Albert.

Corman Park police said the driver fled after an officer attempted to perform a traffic stop.

“The [Corman Park Police Service] officer disengaged, and the vehicle continued southbound before crossing the median into oncoming northbound traffic. The suspect vehicle struck a northbound vehicle, which subsequently caught fire,” a statement from police said.

An 82-year-old man, Doug Bremner, was left in critical condition after the crash, and a Corman Park officer was also taken to Royal University Hospital “as a precaution.”

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the circumstances involving the crash. SIRT is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving serious injury or death connected to police actions or occurring while someone is in police custody.
