RM of Hoodoo issues update after reported algae bloom, dead fish in Wakaw Lake
The RM of Hoodoo has responded to reports of potential blue-green algae bloom and dead fish in Wakaw Lake.
In a release issued Wednesday, the Rural Municipality said members from the Saskatchewan Public Health Association (SPHA) arrived on Tuesday, July 21, when they performed tests at three separate locations around the lake at Regional Park Beach, Poplar Beach, and Hoodoo Beach.
The RM confirmed that officials did not find any harmful algae blooms at any of the test sites, however, “these results do not confirm the absence of algae blooms throughout the entire lake, as conditions can vary between different areas,” read the release.
Blue-green algae, scientifically known as cyanobacteria, is a freshwater bacterium that thrives in warm, nutrient-rich water. Under the right conditions, the algae can reproduce very quickly and form large blooms known as cyanobacterial blooms. Those produce toxins called cyanotoxins, which are harmful to people, pets, livestock, and wildlife.
