Shellbrook welcomes familiar face as new sports coordinator

The Town of Shellbrook has a new person at the helm of all sports in the community.

In a post to the town’s recreation Facebook page, Kelly Herndier was introduced as the Shellbrook’s new sports coordinator and took over the position last week.

She told paNOW that she’ll have a hand in most, if not, all things sports in the community.

“I think it’s going to be a great benefit both to the town, and I guess for myself. It’s kind of in the wheelhouse.”

In this position, she said her job is to establish a working relationship with the different groups and organizations in the community, ensure that the town’s facilities are in working order, and promote the many programs that Shellbrook has to offer.

Herndier has lived in the community for well over a decade, where her new title as sports coordinator is just one of the many roles associated with organizations and businesses in Shellbrook.

On top of her new responsibilities, she is also an educational assistant and librarian at W.P. Sandin High School and works part-time as a bus driver and at the local Co-op gas bar. She is also “heavily involved” with the local Kinnete’s Club and does the cleaning at the community hall.

“I’m a little on the busy side,” she joked.

She continued that sports have always been a part of her life, and it has only become a more important aspect of it now that her kids have embarked on their own sporting journeys.

“Sports and being involved in the community are pretty high up in my… like it’s important to me. My children have always played sports and have been involved in different levels of hockey. My daughter played hockey right from age six competing in house league hockey, competitive AA level hockey. My son played too and I’ve been involved in different boards and stuff in town as well.”

Herndier said she’s sat on Shellbrook’s minor sports board and on the board for the Parkland Elks U18 AA team for a few years. In addition to her roles at the high school, she also helps coach some of the sports that the school offers and with her kids sports teams.

As for her plans as sports coordinator for the town, she said her goal is to keep recreation important and keep opening doors of opportunity for not just the youth, but for all Shellbrook residents.

“Recreation is such a huge thing for a small community. It’s not my job to start new programs, but maybe facilitate or, you know, throw the ideas out there and if somebody wants to run with them, by all means, we’ll definitely help,” she said, noting the absence of the town’s local soccer program and how kids need to travel to Prince Albert to play.

“I know there was a couple of years where we had some volunteers run it but, you know, it’s having those volunteers to run it and finding the people to do it. That’s where the struggle always is, but there’s always opportunities. If we can do that, then we can run the soccer program again or other programs too. It doesn’t necessarily have to be soccer, there’s lots of options.”

She continued that residents can expect continued growth of the already established relationships between the town and local sports organizations, along with good communication with what’s happening in town.

“When [people] have questions or anything, they can reach out and we can get them answers as quickly as we can.”

Herndier’s hiring was well received in the community, with many residents congratulating her on social media and wishing her luck in her new endeavour.
