SaskPower is installing between 8,000 and 10,000 smart meters per month across the province. According to the corporation’s smart meter installation map, more than 285,000 smart meters have been installed provincewide as of May 2026, representing about half of all residential, commercial and industrial meters. 

Cherry said one of the biggest benefits for customers is the end of estimated power bills. 

“Once you have a smart meter installed, we’ll have your actual power use at all times,” he said. “That means the bills you get are based on those actual reads and not on estimated reads.” 

Once the new meters are installed, SaskPower will no longer need to access a customer’s yard for regular meter reads unless there is a specific issue with the meter. 

Customers with smart meters will not pay more than customers who do not have one. 

The meters are also expected to help SaskPower respond to outages more quickly. In areas without smart meters, the Crown corporation often relies on customers to report when the power is out. 

“When we have smart meters installed, we know as soon as an outage occurs and it can sometimes help to pinpoint the cause as well,” Cherry said. “It just gives us a lot more visibility into our grid.” 

He said faster information can help SaskPower respond more quickly and, over the long term, may help shorten the duration of outages. 

The crews coming to Prince Albert are currently working in the Hudson Bay area. Cherry said much of northern Saskatchewan has already been completed, partly because rural and remote areas receive manual meter reads less often and benefit from actual monthly readings. 

SaskPower has also completed a substantial portion of central Saskatchewan and the west-central area around North Battleford. The full provincial rollout is expected to continue over several years.
