Dave Simonson of rural Prince Albert, SK passed away from this world on June 8, 2026, at home with his loving family at his side.
Dave was born the fifth child of Simon and Agnes Simonson in North Battleford, SK. His first ten years were spent growing up on the farm in Bjelde Creek and Rayner Heights districts. In 1954, he and his family moved to Prince Albert due to his father becoming ill with tuberculosis. Life was not easy for his mom and siblings, but he formed many lasting friendships in those growing up years. When he was a young teenager, he ventured out on his own to work. One of his favourite passions in his younger years was driving stock cars. It was a Sunday event enjoyed by family and friends!
His career in the booming gas industry began in the 60’s. He got his Journeyman as an International Heat and Frost Insulator, which took him across Western Canada and into the USA. In the spring of 1969, he met Gerri. They were married in November 1969 in Calgary, AB and made their home there. They welcomed their first son, Trevor, in May of 1970. Later that year, they moved to Red Deer, AB for one year before moving to Prince Albert to be closer to family. Then second son, Derek, arrived in April of 1973. They found city living was not for them, so they bought an acreage in Peter Pond, SK in 1974, which became their dream “oasis” for the next 52 years.
Dave, wanting to be closer to home, gave up his full-time career in insulating, and became employed in trucking and heavy equipment operating. He was a master in all fields. He was always an insulator and never retired from that until his 60s. He worked locally and his last big job was the Upgrader in Lloydminster. He took a large crew of young men under his wing from Prince Albert to work in Lloydminster, Trevor and Derek included.
In retirement, he was never idle, tinkering in his shop and building something new or fixing something. Coffee with his buddies or visiting over the fence kept him content. He had a retirement career with his nephew, Chris, installing sand point wells in the district, a much sought after service. In the last month or so, he told Chris, “I can’t do it anymore”.
His greatest joy in life was being in the presence of family and good friends. As a family, we travelled across Canada to follow our sons in soccer and hockey. Then along came the precious grandchildren and he would never miss a school or sporting event. Of course, hockey was his favourite, then when he had a granddaughter that excelled in hockey, he felt especially blessed.
He passed on his love and knowledge of nature and the outdoors to his sons and grandchildren. His adventurous hunting and fishing trips with his family, extended family, and friends created lifelong memories. Clam Lake, SK being the most loved destination, shared with all for the past 50 years. Dave, Gerri, family, and friends enjoyed many winter vacations to warm destinations, but none compared to his trips to Clam Lake, winter or summer.
Dave is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gerri; his sons, Trevor (Dawn Halsall), and Derek (Lisa); grandchildren, Rhett, Jack, and Jana; his sisters, Isabel Sabo, Elizabeth Cowles, andMarilyn Simonson (Gord Dobrowolsky); and his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Simonson, Gail (Allan) Larson, Sandra (Fred) Beaulac, and Patti (Kevin) Cook.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, Agnes and Simon Simonson; siblings, Martin Simonson, and Eileen Olson; parents-in-law, Edward Paulson, and Sarah Bloom; brothers-in-law, Harvey Cowles, Jack Olson, and Jack Sabo; sisters-in-law, Meridel and Paulette Paulson.
Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation, located Central Avenue North, RM of Buckland 491, Prince Albert, SK.
